R&B duo Thyro and Yumi take PhilPop Grand Prize for Second Time.

That’s exactly what happened to Thyro Alfaro and Yumi Lacsamana as the real-life couple and singing-songwriting team found themselves winning the 4th Philippine Popular Music Festival with their infectious R&B ditty, “Triangulo”.

It was clearly a case of déjà vu for Thyro and Yumi as they again found themselves standing on the same Meralco Theater stage Saturday night, where they took home P1 million cash prize and a beautifully crafted Ramon Orlina trophy two years ago for their PhilPop winning song, “Dati” interpreted by Sam Concepcion, Tippy Dos Santos and rapper Quest.

What made their second PhilPop victory even sweeter was the fact that, this time, they themselves interpreted their triumphant entry together with former “X-Factor” Philippines finalist Jeric Medina.

“Thyro originally wrote ‘Triangulo’ for another singer and then he decided to write it for himself before he asked for my inputs. After that, the song’s message changed and is now told from the vantage point of three people,” Yumi recalled to InterAksyon during the press presentation of the finalists.

Jeric himself feels very fortunate to be added as a co-interpreter of the song which he felt was really special the first time he heard it. “I’m just glad that they chose me to perform this with them,” he enthused.

Another singer-songwriter who was given the green light to interpret his own entry was Davey Langit, who won first runner-up and P500,000 for his entry, “Paratingin Mo Na Siya”. This was his second time in the PhilPop finals and the gambit of the radio jock and occasional wedding singer in choosing himself to be his own interpreter paid off in a big way.

Mark Villar’s soaring “Sa Ibang Mundo”, a song about “conscience and choices” vigorously performed by rocker Kean Cipriano and popular young star Nadine Lustre, won two prizes. The veteran sound engineer’s entry took home P250,000 for its second runner-up finish and another P100,000 for clinching the People’s Choice Award.

Rounding up the winners’ circle is Johannes Garcia’s foray into electronic dance music, “Edge of the World”, which won Best Music Video. Directed by Nolan Bernardino, the video starred the song’s interpreters, Josh Padilla and Yassi Pressman, who are also both VJs for MTV Pinoy.

The other finalists and their respective interpreters were Paul Armesin’s “Tanging Pag-asa Ko” (The Company), Gino Gonzalez Cruz’s and Jeff Arcilla’s “Apat na Buwang Pasko” (Jon Santos), Ned Esguerra’s “For The Rest of My Life” (Side A), Melchor Magno, Jr.’s “Musikaw” (James Reid featuring Pio), Lara Maigue’s “Nasaan”, Ramiru Mataro’s “Walang Hanggan” (with Donnalyn Bartolome), Melvin Joseph Morallos’ “I Owe You My Heart” (Anja Aguilar) and Soc Villanueva’s “Kilig” (Jinky Vidal). All finalists also won P50,000 each.

For this year’s competition, PhilPop partnered with Viva Entertainment which produced this year’s official album and official lyric and music videos.
