Breaking News: 70 People Missing after Ferry Sinks in Central Philippines
The Civil Defense Office said at least 70 people have gone missing after a ferry capsized in the waters off the central island of Leyte amid bad weather on Saturday evening. According to Mina Marasigan, a spokeswoman for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the Maharlika II, with at least 84 people on board, sank and only 14 people have been rescued so far. Marasigan added that the coast guard and some private ships are still in the area, raising hopes that more survivors will be rescued.
The ferry reported steering problems and had also been battered by heavy downpours triggered by Typhoon Kalmaegi which is heading towards northern Philippines. A report from the coast guard said the ferry sank approximately six nautical miles from the island of Panaon or about 420 miles south of Manila. While only 84 crew members and passengers were listed in the manifest, there could be more since some passengers tend to board ferries without being listed.
