Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto R. Yasay meets Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto R. Yasay met Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the sidelines of 11th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia held this weekend. He conveyed President Rodrigo Duterte’s warm greetings to the Japanese leader.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said Secretary Yasay also expressed the Philippines’ sadness at the tragic events in Bangladesh that victimized Japanese nationals. Both sides stated their shared commitment to fighting the scourge of terrorism.

The two also exchange views on the West Philippine Sea, Secretary Yasay thanked Japan for its strong support, and in this regard reiterated the President’s desire to always engage allies of the Philippines.


Yasay stated that the decision of the tribunal provides a legal basis to move forward, and the Philippine Government is currently studying the ruling very carefully. The Secretary also stated that the Philippine Constitution prohibits entering into any agreement that would compromise national interests and rights of Filipinos.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Abe stressed the importance of the rule of law and the need for peaceful means to resolve disputes.

“Secretary Yasay observed the very dynamic economic relationship of the two countries, where Japan remains the country’s top investor and top ODA donor, and stressed that it was important for Japan to be a partner in infrastructure and in agricultural development,” DFA said.

“Prime Minister Abe recalled the progress in cooperative activities, through long-standing Japanese work in Mindanao. He stated that Japan would like to see further development of relations under the new administration and the expansion of Japan’s work in Mindanao throughout the Philippines,” DFA added.
