It's Showtime Joins Public Service Efforts for 'Lando'

News and entertainment teamed up on Monday in light of the devastation from typhoon "Lando," which hit parts of Luzon over the weekend.

In a rare moment, ABS-CBN news reporter Jeff Canoy appeared on the noontime show "It's Showtime" to give the madlang people an update on the current situation in Aurora province, which had been hit by typhoon "Lando."

According to Canoy, the municipalities of Dinalungan, Dilasag, and Casiguran remain inaccessible to rescuers.

He also reported that the strong winds and flash floods were not enough to discourage rescuers from performing their duties as they try to reach those who were trapped on their roofs.

Canoy told the audience that the rescuers gave their assurance that they will not stop until everyone gets rescued, adding that their motto is "Bawal tumiklop. Walang aatras. Maraming nangangailangan."

According to Canoy, there are still enough food, water, and medicine to sustain the requirements at the evacuation centers. However, the evacuees need dry clothes and ready-to-eat food.

Meanwhile, Paul Leonardo of Nueva Ecija received a "Proud to be Pinoy" award from "It's Showtime" in recognition of his effort to pool financial support and prayers for the affected communities in his province.

On Sunday, Leonardo utilized his Facebook account to ask for donations from his friends in the US. In a post, he told his friends about his plan to distribute relief goods to families who live in the low-lying areas in Nueva Ecija.

He wrote: "It is unfortunate to let you know that our province Nueva Ecija was hit by super typhoon Lando. Thousand of families were affected and relocated specially those who are living in low lying areas. Most of their houses were washed-out as well as their source of living. I am planning to distribute relief goods to the impacted families soon as the roads are cleared and safe to pass. I am asking your financial support and prayers as it will go a long way to those who are in need."

As of posting, Leonardo has already raised $100 from two of his friends in Arizona. He will use the amount to buy rice, canned goods, and clean water for the evacuees.

Although he will be leaving for the US this Friday, Leonardo will continue his relief efforts through local agencies.

"It's Showtime" has announced that they will also be donating P30,000 worth of grocery items to Leonardo. "It's Showtime" hosts also vowed to give financial assistance.

Apart from the donation, Leonardo will also receive a "Proud to be Pinoy" plaque from the variety show "for showing the good values of the Philippines."

Donations can also be made through the Sagip Kapamilya Hotline 411-4995.
