The Voice Kids Philippines 2016 Blind Auditions: "Anak" by John Paul
It only took one note from John Paul Gumandoy, a nine-year-old from Cebu, to convince Broadway star and "The Voice Kids" coach Lea Salonga to turn her chair for him during the first blind auditions episode of the show's third season.
"Unang bigkas mo pa lang, nakuha mo na ako. And then you got better and better," Salonga told Gumandoy, who became the third three-chair turner of the night after he performed an endearing rendition of Freddie Aguilar's folk classic "Anak."
"Iyong delivery mo was something very special," coach and local rock icon Bamboo Mañalac, added.
"Alam ko it sounded like a child pero the way you attached the song was very different. I liked it, especially iyong ending mo na napaka-confident. Pag ganoon ka kumanta, I forget about notes eh. That's how you should sing."
Megastar Sharon Cuneta, who replaced pop star Sarah Geronimo as one of the mentors, then explained her decision to turn her chair last.
"Napakaraming beses ko nang narinig iyang awit na iyan, pero noong narinig ko iyong version mo, kaya ako iyong huling umikot, gusto ko talagang buoin kasi ayaw ko talagang maimpluwensyahan ako ng mga naalala kong bersyon," Cuneta said.
Gumandoy picked Cuneta to be his coach, saying that he had always looked up to the entertainment veteran for inspiration. He is the first ever member of Team Sharon.
Salonga, meanwhile, scored two recruits from Saturday's episode, namely Cebu native Yessha Hilkiah dela Calzada and 11-year-old Noel Comia Jr. from Batangas City. Mañalac welcomed 12-year-old Xylein Herere to his team.
"The Voice Kids," which is hosted by Luis Manzano, Robi Domingo, and Kim Chiu, airs Saturdays after "Home Sweetie Home" and on Sundays after "Wansapanataym."
